Ceanothus is a colorful and fragrant evergreen shrub. The leaves have a shiny upper surface that feels “gummy” when pinched between the thumb and forefinger. The leaves are small, typically 1 to 5 cm long, and mostly with serrated margins. Native Americans used the dried leaves as a herbal tea.
