Kalimiopsis-3

Kalmiopsis (Kalmiopsis leachiana) is a rare evergreen shrub found only in the Siskiyou Mountains of southwest Oregon. It grows 10-30 cm tall, and blooms April to June. The flowers are pink-purple, with a star-like calyx of five conjoined petals. Kalmiopsis is a relict of the pre-Ice Age era and one of the oldest members of the heath (Ericaceae) family, which includes huckleberry and azalea. The Kalmiopsis Wilderness is named for this unique plant.
