The Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) is a fish eating raptor. It spots its prey from above, and then plunges into the water gripping the slippery fish with its long, curved claws and spiny footpads. Other fish catching adaptations include a reversible outer toe, dense oily plumage, and nasal valves which prevent water from entering its nostrils. Osprey generally mate for life, nesting in treetops and rocky outcrops. Their large, stick-built nests are lined with bark, sod, vegetation, and even human debris. Osprey are found on all continents except Antarctica.
