River Otter

The River Otter (Lutra canadensis) is 3 to 4 feet long with a sleek body, dense, waterproof fur and webbed hind feet. This playful creature swims gracefully and can remain under water for several minutes, diving to depths of 60 feet. Its ears and the nostrils close when submerged. It feeds mainly on fish, but also eats insects, frogs, and occasionally small mammals and birds. It has a keen sense of smell and uses its long, sensitive whiskers to detect prey in cloudy water.
