California Poppy

Echscholzia californica is found at lower elevations throughout the West. Its bluish-green, parsley-shaped leaves sprout basally. The four-petal flowers range from yellow to orange. The long, slender seed pod dries and splits, shooting tiny black seeds in all directions. Drought resistant seeds may lie dormant for years before rapidly taking root after a good rain. It is perennial in mild habitats, and annual in harsher climates.
