Hummingbirds are nectivores that hover in mid-air by flapping their wings 12-80 times per second. They have the highest metabolism of all animals while in flight, with a heart rate exceeding 1,200 beats per minute. Hummingbirds consume more than their body weight in nectar each day, but can slow their metabolism at night or when food is not available. Their average lifespan is 3 to 5 years.
