Coastal Redwood Print

Looking up through a Coastal Redwood canopy can be a dizzying and humbling experience.  These majestic conifers (Sequoia sempervirens) can rise over 350 feet, reach diameters of 22 feet, and live an average of 700 years.  Life begins as a seed from tiny one-inch cones or through sprouting from the shallow root system.  The canopy’s separate ecosystem can support wandering salamanders, red tree voles, five-fingered ferns and red huckleberry shrubs.  Redwoods depend on fog for more than 30% of their water needs.  They are are high in tannin and do not produce resin or pitch, making them naturally resistant to insects, fungi, and fire.
