Steelhead are anadromous rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) native to the Pacific Coast. They live in the ocean but return to fresh water to spawn. Steelhead may make several spawning trips between fresh and salt water. Summer steelhead migrate to inland streams when they are sexually immature, between May and October, and require several months to mature and spawn. Winter steelhead mature fully in the ocean before migrating up costal streams, between November and April, and spawn shortly after returning. Smolts remain in fresh water for a year before heading to sea.
