Butterwort

$695.00

The “buttery” leaves of the Butterwort (Pinguicula) are covered with minute glandular hairs. Peduncular glands produce a shiny, sticky mucilage that attracts and traps small prey such as gnats and fruit flies. Sessile glands then secrete enzymes dissolving the prey, which is then absorbed by the leaf, leaving only the exoskeleton on the leaf surface. Vibrant, colorful flowers bloom on stalks far above the leaves to avoid trapping potential pollinators. Butterworts are found throughout the Northern Hemisphere in moist, nutrient poor habitats.
