The cobweb thistle (Cirsium occidentale) is a drought tolerant, non- invasive thistle native to Western North America. The large bright red disk flowers have spiny bracts covered with densely matted wooly hairs. The prickly leaves are also laced with fibers resembling cobwebs. Certain butterflies use this thistle as a larval food source, and birds feed on thistle seeds and use the chaff from the flowers to line their nest.
