Pezizaceae are a family of fungi that grow in the shape of a cup. Spores form on the fruiting body’s inner surface. The cup shape serves to focus raindrops into splashing the spores out of the cup and also enables wind currents to blow the spores out. The Orange Peel Fungus (Aleuria aurantia) is round at first, becoming cup shaped to wavy or flattened. It prefers bare soil or sand, but also grows in moss or grass.
