Matsutake (Tricholoma magnivelare) are popular for their high market value and special taste. They are also an important component of the forest ecosystem, forming a symbiotic relationship with a variety of conifer and hardwood species. Matsutake appear in the Fall, forming below the forest litter in colonies called “shiros.” The fruiting bodies become apparent as slight bulges in the litter. Eventually the caps force a crack in the litter surface, revealing white gilled mushrooms. Dried Candystick stems (Allotropa virgata) often indicate matsutake because the Candystick obtains its nutrients through matsutake mycelia.
