The Mountain Lady’s Slippery (Cypripedium montanum) is a rhizomatous, autotrophic orchid which prefers north facing slopes of mixed evergreen and coniferous forests in western North America. The stem is 20-70 cm with alternating, plicate leaves, topped with one to three flowers. Sepals and petals are maroon-brown with a white pouch-like labellum. The fruit capsule produces thousands of microscopic seeds which require a mycorrhizal association with Rhizoctonia fungi for several months or years before they germinate.
