Dutton Cliff rises nearly 2000 feet above Crater Lake, dwarfing the “Phantom Ship,” the tiny island at its base. This 500-foot island, with 163-foot pyroxene spires and quartz-filled seams, is part of the same lava flow as Dutton Cliff. The island contains two distinct ecozones. The hotter, dryer southern exposure has more Ponderosa pine, western white pine and manzanita, while the north side, with less extreme temperature changes, includes Shasta red fir and mountain hemlock.
